(Richmond, BC – June 16) In one week, seven of the top wheelchair rugby teams in the world will battle at the Richmond Olympic Oval at the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. The event, which will take place from June 23-26, is wheelchair rugby’s final stop before the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
This year’s Canada Cup will be especially important for Team Canada, which is ranked #1 in the world for the first time in 13 years.
“We’re so thrilled to welcome the top teams in the world to the Richmond Olympic Oval,” said tournament chair Gail Hamamoto. “Wheelchair rugby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport and we know that local sports fans will fall in love with it.”
Team Canada features the following local athletes:
• Trevor Hirschfield – co-captain (Vancouver, BC)
• Byron Green (Vancouver, BC)
• Ian Chan (Richmond, BC)
• Travis Murao (Victoria, BC)
• Zak Madell (Victoria, BC)
• Miranda Biletski (Victoria, BC)

The competition begins for Team Canada on Thursday, June 23 when Canada takes on Sweden. Canada’s two biggest matches will take place on Saturday, June 25 at 7 pm when Canada takes on Australia and Sunday, June 26 at 7 pm when Canada plays against their rivals, the USA.
