Team Sweden cruises past Switzerland at Canada Cup rugby tournament

RICHMOND, B.C. _ Team Sweden built an early lead 10-point then coasted to a 53-38 victory over Team Switzerland Friday to register their first victory at the Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament.

Sweden, ranked sixth in the world, held a 26-17 half-time lead over the Swiss, who are ranked 14th.
“We started off good, as planned,” said Sweden’s Tomas Hjert. “Maybe we got a bit comfortable because we stepped back a little bit.

“All in all it’s a solid win and we are happy about it.”

Team Sweden evened their record at 1-1. They had lost their opening game 54-44 to Canada Thursday. Switzerland is 0-1.

“We got a solid lead, then we started to sub around, and everybody got some playing time,” said Hjert. “We just wanted a solid win.”

The tournament is being held at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The games are being streamed at www.canadacupwcrugby.com andhttp://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics.

Every team will play each other in this unique round robin format. The competition ends Sunday.
