RICHMOND, B.C. _ Team Sweden built an early lead 10-point then coasted to a 53-38 victory over Team Switzerland Friday to register their first victory at the Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament.
Sweden, ranked sixth in the world, held a 26-17 half-time lead over the Swiss, who are ranked 14th.
“We started off good, as planned,” said Sweden’s Tomas Hjert. “Maybe we got a bit comfortable because we stepped back a little bit.
“All in all it’s a solid win and we are happy about it.”
Team Sweden evened their record at 1-1. They had lost their opening game 54-44 to Canada Thursday. Switzerland is 0-1.
“We got a solid lead, then we started to sub around, and everybody got some playing time,” said Hjert. “We just wanted a solid win.”
Every team will play each other in this unique round robin format. The competition ends Sunday.
