Canada Finishes the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament in Fourth Place

(RICHMOND, BC – June 26) After a 56-53 loss to the USA, Canada finished the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament in fourth place. This is the first time that Team Canada has not won a medal at the Canada Cup in the tournament’s 12-year history.

USA’s perfect record earned it the gold medal. Australia and Japan claimed silver and bronze respectively.
Despite the loss, Coach Kevin Orr was proud of his team’s effort.

Canada’s Gold Medal Hopes Dashed by Australia at the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament

Canada’s hopes of a gold medal were dashed today with a 54-43 loss against Australia at the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. Due to the tournament’s round-robin format, Canada’s medal hopes now depend on the performance of other teams, and a win against USA tomorrow at 2:30 pm.

“Sometimes it’s hard to say what team is going to show up,” said head coach Kevin Orr. “When we play our style of play, we’re awesome. When we don’t, it’s ugly.”

Canada Falls to Japan On Day 2 of 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament

(RICHMOND, BC – June 24) After winning a tough battle against Great Britain earlier in the day, Canada fell against Japan (#3) to go 2-1 at the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament.

Though Canada took an early lead, Daisuke Ikezaki and Yukinobu Ike forced several Canadian turnovers to keep the lead see-sawing. At the half, Canada held a narrow 30-29 lead.

Canada Hangs On To Win Nail-biter Against Great Britain at the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament

(Richmond, BC --  June 24) Team Canada (#1) extended its winning streak to 2-0 this afternoon at the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament after a nail-biting match against Great Britain (#5). The squad will face off against Japan (#3) at 7 pm.

Canada leapt out to an early lead thanks to some hard hits by Zak Madell (Okotoks, AB). At the end of the first quarter, they were up 15-11.

Canada Claims First 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament Victory Over Sweden

(Richmond, BC – June 23rd) Team Canada claimed a 54-44 win over Sweden today to kick off its 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament campaign.

Though Canada started strong, Sweden brought the game back to a 26-26 tie at halftime. To start the third, Coach Orr subbed in Zak Madell, Miranda Biletski, Mike Whitehead and Trevor Hirschfield. The lineup quickly forced four turnovers to build a lead. Canada never looked back, finishing the game with a double-digit lead.
